Why We Grieve People Who Hurt Us

temp-post-image

You finally walked away. You chose yourself.

Everyone’s telling you how strong you are.

But in the quiet moments—when no one’s watching—grief shows up like a wave you didn’t see coming. You find yourself missing someone who betrayed you. Mourning what could have been. Questioning what it says about you that you still care.

If this is you, please hear this:
You are not weak. You are not broken. You’re just healing.

Why Do I Miss Someone Who Hurt Me?

This is one of the most common—and most painful—questions my clients ask.

You might have experienced betrayal, manipulation, or emotional neglect. And still, you miss the good moments. The shared routines. The hope you clung to.
This isn’t a sign you made the wrong decision—it’s a sign you’re human.

Because grief isn’t just about losing the person.
It’s about losing the future you imagined.
The identity you held as a partner.
The belief that love alone would be enough.

The Trauma Bond Is Real

If you were in a high-stress or unhealthy relationship, your nervous system may still be hooked into survival mode. You were walking on eggshells, adapting constantly—and your brain got used to that chaos as “normal.”

When things finally go quiet, your system doesn’t know what to do.
So it misses the noise. The pattern. The person. Even if that person hurt you.

This doesn’t mean you want them back.
It means you’re trying to rewire what love and safety look like. That takes time—and support.

Grief Isn’t a Straight Line

You might bounce between emotions:

One day empowered

The next day crushed by loneliness

Then angry, then numb, then back to missing them again

This emotional rollercoaster is normal.
And the goal of therapy isn’t to stop the ride—it’s to help you understand it, ride it with compassion, and eventually step off with clarity.

Healing Is Possible (And You Don’t Have to Do It Alone)

If you’re sitting in the quiet, wondering why this still hurts so much—you’re not alone.

I work with clients just like you. Deep thinkers. Deep feelers. People who’ve been through a lot and are tired of surface-level advice. Together, we can explore the grief, name the wounds, and begin to heal what’s been buried.

🖤 You don’t have to carry this alone anymore.
Let’s talk about what healing could look like for you.
